• 5.0 out of 5 stars from cornoprimo -- A good scholarly edition : I bought this as I have other (paper) books in the same series. It's everything one wants in terms of a good scholarly edition, with plenty of notes to explain the political context of the Second Empire and the events that Zola was writing about. There are also essays on the book and on Zola. The story itself is perhaps not one of the more exciting ones in the Rougon-Macquart series, but is essential reading for all Zolaphiles. It's just a pity that there aren't so many of the other books in the same edition published as e-books. The free editions have no commentary or notes and you really need those unless you're exceptionally well-versed in French history. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 12, 2012 )
